Insurance products and guarantees

Annuities are insurance contracts, not bank deposits. They are not insured by the FDIC. Contractual guarantees depend on the claims-paying ability of the issuing insurance company. An annuity is not appropriate for every person or every financial need.

Access to funds may be limited. Surrender charges, market value adjustments, bonus recapture, rider charges, and taxes may apply depending on the product and transaction. These can reduce the amount you receive. Read the actual contract, disclosures, and illustration before deciding.

Taxes and retirement accounts

Annuity earnings generally accumulate tax-deferred and are generally taxed as ordinary income when withdrawn. Tax treatment depends on the funding source and circumstances. Withdrawals before age 59½ may be subject to an additional federal tax penalty. An annuity held in an IRA or other tax-qualified retirement plan does not provide additional tax deferral beyond that plan.
